Adult Numeracy at Families First (IW)

We are able to offer the opportunity for individuals to access basic skills tutoring, in City and Guilds Adult Numeracy. Parents can study at the level that is most appropriate to them. They may join for a variety of reasons including improving employability prospects, learning to support their child's learning and meeting other adults.

Adult Numeracy Sessions

Sessions are held one a week, during term time and the tutors are supplied by the Isle of Wight College. This year, parents have successfully passed their Level 1 exam and are working towards their Level 2 which will be taken later in the year. Each year we see good pass rates, and for those taking part, a sense of achievement and accomplishment.

Chatterbags from Families First (IW)

Carisbrooke Chatterbags have been developed and produced to build communication skills between parents/carers and their child/children.

Chatterbags are fabric woven bags containing various resources such as games, books, toys, puppets etc., which will compliment children's learning. These can be borrowed on a weekly basis (rather like a library book service) and are an enjoyable and fun way for children to increase their knowledge and enhance their education. We have three types of Chatterbags. These are:

                      Foundation    - bags for Pre-school / Reception

Key Stage 1  - bags for Years 1 and 2

Key Stage 2  - bags for Years 3 and 4

Chatterbags are loved by children and parents alike.

Family Learning Groups

The Family Room has been working closely with Carisbrooke Primary School to give parents access to family learning style activities. Every other week a teacher from the school delivers a 2hr session to parents and carers on a variety of aspects of children's learning. The teacher gives guidance and support to the group on how to support and encourage the learning journey and this includes aspects such as spelling, writing, reading and numeracy. Occassionally the parents also have the opportunity to visit local places of interest such as Carisbrooke Castle, that compliment the children's learning.

Recent work with Carisbrooke Castle Museum

Carisbrooke Castle Museum were able to deliver five sessions for the Family Learning:

                       Learning from Objects

                       How we made our Clothes

                       Magnetic Games

                       Hats and Helmets

                       Roman Armour

These activities have been for parents and some have been for both parents and children to take part in together.

Thank you to Joy and Chris from the Castle Museum.

Family Learning for the Early Years

The Family Room has also been working alongside 'Clever CloggsDay Care, providing family learning style activities for the early years children.  (http://carisbrookecepri.iow.sch/community/community.htm)

The sessions are available for parent and child to attend together. The sessions last for approximately 2hrs and Jo from the Day Centre setting comes into the Family Room to guide and support parents on how to positively be part of their children's progress and development. Parents are encouraged into play and communication as well as learning about some of the early years targets.
